What Are e-Gates?
e-Gates are automated border control systems that utilize biometric verification—such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanning—to authenticate travelers' identities. By scanning your passport and boarding pass, the system verifies your information, allowing for swift and secure immigration clearance without manual intervention.
Who Can Use e-Gates in India?
Currently, the e-Gate facility is available to:
- Indian citizens
- Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders
Travelers must register for the FTI-TTP to access e-Gate services. While holding a biometric e-passport can enhance the experience, it is not a mandatory requirement for registration.
Where Are e-Gates Available?
As of now, e-Gates are operational at the following eight international airports in India:
- Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport)
- Mumbai (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport)
- Bengaluru (Kempegowda International Airport)
- Hyderabad (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport)
- Chennai (Chennai International Airport)
- Kolkata (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport)
- Ahmedabad (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport)
- Cochin (Cochin International Airport)
Plans are underway to expand this facility to more airports across the country.
How to Register for FTI-TTP
To utilize e-Gates, eligible travelers must complete the following steps:
- Online Registration: Visit the FTI-TTP portal and fill out the application form with necessary personal and travel details.
- Biometric Enrollment: Schedule an appointment to provide biometric data (fingerprints and facial photograph) at a designated Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or during your next international departure.Indiatimes
- Approval: After verification, approved travelers will be added to the 'Trusted Traveller' whitelist, enabling e-Gate access.
How Do e-Gates Work?
Upon arrival or departure at an airport equipped with e-Gates:
- Scan Boarding Pass: Place your boarding pass on the scanner to retrieve flight details.
- Scan Passport: Insert your passport into the reader for verification.
- Biometric Authentication: The system captures your biometric data (facial recognition and/or fingerprints) to confirm identity
- Gate Opens: Once authenticated, the gate opens, allowing you to proceed without manual immigration stamping.
Additional Information
e-Passports: India has begun issuing chip-enabled biometric e-passports in select cities, enhancing security and facilitating smoother immigration processes. While not mandatory, obtaining an e-passport can complement the e-Gate experience.
Digi Yatra: A separate initiative, Digi Yatra, offers a paperless and contactless travel experience using facial recognition technology at various checkpoints within the airport. This program is currently operational at several Indian airports and is distinct from the FTI-TTP.
