The UK Home Office released a new Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1333) on 14 October 2025, introducing several key updates that affect students, skilled workers, and visitors. These reforms mark one of the most significant shifts in UK immigration policy this year.

1. Higher English Language Requirement for Work Visas

From 8 January 2026, applicants under economic migration routes — including the Skilled Worker, Scale-Up, and High Potential Individual visas — must now demonstrate A-level equivalent (B2) English proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

This marks a significant increase from the previous B1 level and will impact those applying for roles that previously required only intermediate English. The government says this change aims to ensure “better workplace communication and integration.

2. Graduate Visa Duration Reduced

The popular Graduate Route, which allows international students to stay in the UK after completing their studies, will now be shortened from 24 months to 18 months.

This change — expected to take effect in 2027 — reduces the time graduates have to secure eligible employment or switch to another visa route. It reflects the UK government’s growing focus on encouraging skilled work-based migration rather than extended post-study stays.

3. Botswana Nationals Now Require a UK Visa

As of 3:00 PM (BST) on 14 October 2025, Botswana nationals must now apply for a UK Visit Visa before travelling.

Previously, Botswana was part of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, which allowed visa-free short visits. This change aligns Botswana with other nations that now require pre-travel screening and formal visa applications.
 

4. The UK is restructuring how applications are assessed under new Suitability criteria.

This update replaces the old “Part 9” of the Immigration Rules with a new section that standardises grounds for refusal and cancellation — such as criminality, deception, or breach of immigration conditions.

These changes take effect from 11 November 2025 and will apply across most visa routes, including work, study, and family.

5. Student Route Adjustments

Students will also see a few important updates:

Maintenance (funds) requirement increased from 11 November 2025, meaning applicants must show higher proof of financial stability.

Certain students can now switch to the Innovator Founder route under specified conditions, opening opportunities for graduates with start-up ambitions.

6. Family and Settlement Rules Updated

The latest changes also align the Family, Private Life, and Adult Dependant Relative routes with the new “Suitability” framework. This means decisions on these visas will now follow the same consistent standards for eligibility and refusal.
